AO5- Self Discipline

Culverhay Sport Relief 12 Hour Run.
In this unit, we are going to organise and participate in a 12hour Cardio challenge for Sport Relief.

This is my Diary of events/lessons in the build up to the event.

Lesson 1 Wednesday 22nd February 2012.
In the first lesson, we got together and planned out exactly what we need to prepare in order to organise the event. we split into groups and dedicated job roles to each group in order to prepare everything in time for the event.
my job role is to organise the Assembly and get publicity so that people know about the event. we also decided on the distance we were going to travel and what machines we are going to use (treadmill, X trainer, and static bike).  We also made a Target of how much we wish to raise (£500).

This will benefit my self discipline as it would prove that i am capable of doing work independently and that I am reliable to do work for the group.
My  time management and attendance  proved that i can attend lessons and turn up on time which helped me gain the vital information i required from the lesson.
My punctuality shows that i can turn up to lessons with the right equipment so that i can learn efficiently and contribute to activities my being able to record what i have to do for my part of the task, proving that i take responsibility for my learning and the groups learning and that i have a positive attitude to learning.

Lesson 2
we started our first training session in which we got onto the treadmills, x trainers and bikes and did our first 30 minute training session. I turned up on time with the correct kit and attitude to work. i gained benefits from this because I was able to listen to the instructions given to me by the teacher. Also, i had enough time to warm up properly because i was on time with kit (punctuality) and didn't have to wait around for some or work in unsuitable kit such as jeans, which benefited  me because it  prevented me from getting injured.
I chose to take the hardest challenge first which was the treadmill. i found it tiring and struggled at first, however i was determined to finish the 30 minutes. i managed to run 4.5 Kilometres in that short period which is what i will need to be reaching each time i get onto a machine during the event

lesson 3 9:45 AM- 10:45 AM
in our 3rd lesson, we started to organise our event further. I got involved by sending an email to the Headteacher asking for permission to hold an assembly about sport relief and our event. i then began to plan my assembly, finding relevant and suitable videos and sport relief logos.

At lunch time on the same day, we all met up at the Gym for an extra training session in which i went on the X trainer.I found that it was much easier than the treadmill and managed to cover a distance of 4.85km in the 30 minute period. turning up to these sessions in our own time will benefit me because i will become fitter and healthier which will make it easier for me on the day. also, to dedicate time of my own to the project will benefit my self discipline because i will be able to give my time up in order to work.

  lesson 4 period 3
we once again entered the Gym and began another 30 minute session. i decided to run on the treadmill as you gain more benefits from it. I turned up on time which benefited me because i was able to listen to Mr Hooper's instructions. I was also in the correct kit which benefited me as I was able to work effectively because I was in kit. Because it was a Monday, i was fairly tired and therefore struggled in the first 10 minutes.

lesson 4.5 lunchtime
At lunchtime on the same day we went into the gym and I ran another 30 minutes on the treadmill. this will benefit my self-discipline as i was able to allocate my free time to train for the event. this shows that i have commitment and am willing to work independently

Since the last session, i have done 8 lunchtime sessions. this will benefit my self discipline as i have been working hard individually to improve my fitness for the run. this will improve my self discipline because i was able to bring kit and train on my own. it also shows that I'm a committed to my work and can put aside time of my own to work.

Friday- Assembly
This week i had to do an assembly for the key stage 4 students about the event. I created a PowerPoint for the assembly which had pictures, text, facts and videos to back up what we were doing. As the assembly was assigned to me, i was the main speaker in the assembly and explained what we were doing, when and how we were going to do it. I also viewed a video about why people participate in sport relief with JLS visiting a hospital in Africa for kids with Diarrhoea. I finished the assembly, by stating a few facts and explained to the pupils how they could get involved and help out.
This will benefit my self discipline as it proved that I was reliable to complete the PowerPoint and contribute towards the groups overall activity. Also, my personal presentation as i wore a shirt and tie for the assembly
The week before the event. (18th- 23rd march)
In the week before the event, we were given the task to complete ten 30 minute sessions within the week. we had the choice when to do them, however we had to do it in between lessons. I managed to complete all 10. this will benefit my self discipline as i was able to put time aside to complete a task. Also i was able to recognise what kit i needed to bring, what energy food i needed to eat etc. i was also able to organise my time management and was able to complete sessions in between lessons rather than missing lessons. This would also show that my attitude to learning is good as i was able to give up my free to train for my event. this would benefit my performance on the day because i would be fitter and healthier for the challenge and would be able to complete the run and be reliable to the group.

In this week i also had to perform the same assembly to the KS3 students. the assembly didn't go as well as the first assembly, due to the fact that the videos wouldn't load up. However, i used my initiative and got on withhe assembly and explained what the video was about.  I was the main speaker in the assembly again due to the fact that no-one else wanted to speak. this shows that i have a positive attitude to learning and that i am reliable to do the tasks that no-one wanted to do. this benefits my performance as i was contributing to the activity and speaking in front of the school even though i was uncomfortable.

the Day of the Event MONDAY 26TH MARCH 2012

on the day of the challenge, i got to school at around 4:30 am ready for a 5:00am start. we all meet up where  the caretakers had set out static bikes in the old gym for the pupils and teacher to ride on for a small charge. We decided our 3 groups, i was put in the strongest group with Liam and Mr Hooper. we decided to run 2nd and we had to do 8 turns each on the three machines (treadmill, cross trainer, exercise bike).  Each turn was 30 minutes long with an hours rest in between.

as i wasn't on first, i helped decorate the old gym, putting banners and posters around the gym and on the bikes.  we set up a rest area with crash mats where we could lie down after each run. when it was my time work, i couldn't really use the cross trainer because it brought pain on my lower back and therefore mainly used the treadmill and static bike. the first run was pretty tough as it was still early and had to break into the intense exercise of the day. i had completed 3 runs before the pupils began their break time. during break time, i went around the school with a bucket, collecting money and trying to get people involved by urging them to get onto the bikes in the old gym.

by 4:00 i was tired but ready for my last run on the treadmill, i found that it felt like i was running forever, however i completed the run and prepared to motivate the last 3 runners before the lst run of the day. after the run, we all had pictures of us holding the banner.(see below)

i ate sensibly throughout the day. i ate high energy food such as Mars bars, bananas, apples, pasta with tuna and chicken, nutri-grain bars and drank plenty of water.

I managed to raise over £130 on my sponsorship form. This all helped my self-discipline, because I was able attend on the day on time with the correct equipment i.e food, water, shorts etc. and attend the training sessions usually in my own time. i was able  get up early on the day and complete the 8 runs and i was even willing to run extra if somebody dropped out. I thought my performance on the day was excellent as I never gave up and was able to contribute t a group activity.

I showed good self discipline during the whole task as my personal presentation was good, i wore shirt and tie at the assembly's and sporty gear with the culverhay logo on my shirt when training and on the day. Also, I showed good punctuality as I turned up to all the training sessions and on the day on time ready to work. My time management was good  as I turned up on time when I needed to, and was able to delegate time of my own towards training which shows good self discipline. Also, we were given 4 days to complete 10 30min runs in the week before the event.
I completed these because my time management and self discipline was good and i was able to get up early and run before school and during my free periods. I was reliable as I attended every session and did my individual job (the assembly) in order for the team to pass the task . As well as this,
I attended every lesson which shows I am disciplined enough to turn up. My attitude towards learning was positive as i not only  turned up to the sessions, but was also able to attend my other lesson around school without missing them due to training. I contributed a lot to activities surrounding our run as I had to make the PowerPoint on my own due to the fact the Cameron was never in. also showed good self discipline in taking responsibility for learning as i designed a PowerPoint so that we could all pass the course. i also trained which benefited my fitness which made the running easier.
